And yet opportunities abound in eco-tourism, cultural tourism, adventure tourism, and sustainable hospitality concepts!
African entrepreneurs are increasingly active across the tourism value chain - from accommodation and food services to experience providers, transportation, and cultural attractions.
Yet most entrepreneurs in the sector often face challenge such as limited access to capital, market reach and business expertise.
💪🏿Mentorship is a powerful tool to bridge these gaps, offering emerging business leaders the guidance and networks they need to thrive.🚀
Tourism is a business that thrives through networks and collaboration.
By connecting new entrepreneurs with seasoned industry veterans, mentorship accelerates innovation, fosters sustainable practices, and helps local businesses compete on a global stage.
Some industry veterans in the tourism industry are creating Mentorship programmes and below are some such examples. These programs are creating a positive impact. However, this needs to scale significantly and more also needs to be done particularly at a policy level to fully derive the potential benefits of tourism across the continent.
Mentorship Programs for Entrepreneurs in the African's Tourism sector
1. Essence of Africa Mentorship Programme
The Essence of Africa Mentorship Programme mentors emerging tourism businesses by providing them with access to exhibition platforms and expert guidance. Over 100 small and medium tourism enterprises across Africa have benefitted.
2. Tourism Business Coaching & Mentorship Programme
This program was successfully launched in Botswana and has expanded to other parts of Africa. Over 150 businesses have participated.
3. UNESCO Mentorship for African World Heritage Professionals
This program assists young professionals at World Heritage Sites in Africa by pairing them with experienced mentors to foster skills in cultural tourism, heritage management, and entrepreneurship. Several alumni now manage local tourism initiatives and have contributed to the improved preservation and tourism integration of iconic sites.
Conclusion
⚡As Victoria Falls inspires awe, mentorship can inspire entrepreneurial success, driving inclusive growth and celebrating Africa’s rich heritage.
As an entrepreneur in African tourism, you must remember the adage "Your network is your net worth" - it is very applicable in this industry.
🤝You must network and reach out to mentors with established links in the industry.
Identify mentors with access to key source markets and proven success, and engage them to help you scale faster and smarter.
Use tourism associations, trade shows, and digital platforms offer rich opportunities to meet industry leaders and mentors- use them to build relationships and find mentors.
🌍At a continental level, the African Continental Free Trade Area must craft policies to facilitate the implementation of mentorship programmes in the tourism industry to complement the current efforts of private players.
The tourism industry will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of a fully connected Africa and the mentorship of entrepreneurs in the tourism industry needs special attention from AfCFTA.
Whether you are an entrepreneur in the tourism industry ready to scale your business or a leader positioned to shape continental policy, the question is not whether you can afford to invest in mentorship - it is whether Africa can afford for you not to!
